Why Switch to Solar Energy: The Environmental Benefits

Of the many reasons for switching to solar energy, one that particularly stands out is its environmental benefits. A welcome (and much needed) alternative to the non-renewable energy sources we have been relying on, solar is not only the cleanest but also the most abundant energy source available. While many people are making the switch to solar because of the substantial financial benefits (like a lower power bill and increased home value), the environmental benefits remain one of the top reasons for making the switch.

In today’s post, we want to take a closer look at the environmental benefits of solar energy.

1.    Solar energy is renewable. Unlike fossil fuels, the sun isn’t running out any time soon. Every second, it produces more energy than 100 000 times the world’s energy use, and harnessing this energy causes no depletion to the sun. Our current reliance on fossil fuels isn’t sustainable because they are a finite resource. Switching to solar means switching to a sustainable and natural source that doesn’t deplete our planet’s resources.

2.    Solar energy reduces greenhouse gases. The burning of fossil fuels creates greenhouse gases, which are contributing to climate change and rising global temperatures. Solar, on the other hand, is a clean energy source and making the switch reduces greenhouse gas emissions and our carbon footprint.

3.    Solar energy improves air quality. Solar energy is a clean and completely natural resource, so using it doesn’t add any pollution or chemicals into our environment. Compare this to the burning of fossil fuels, which releases a number of harmful chemicals that can lead to many health issues, including respiratory and cardiovascular issues. Cleaner air means better health for us and the planet.

4.    Solar energy saves water. Water is one of our most precious resources, and conventional electricity production requires thousands of liters of water each year. Solar energy, in contrast, requires no water at all.

Basically, we have the choice between a completely natural, free, and renewable energy source or the labour intensive, non-renewable, and polluting source of fossil fuels.

Switching to solar energy is a total win-win because it doesn’t just save you money (both in the short term and the long run), but it helps to significantly reduce the demands we’re placing on the planet!
