Understanding NS Power’s Enhanced Net Metering Program

We’ve written a lot about the benefits of owning a solar energy system, but there is a key part that we haven’t talked about yet: Enhanced Net Metering.
Enhanced Net Metering is a program run by Nova Scotia Power that applies to any residential or commercial domain that is running on solar energy (or any other type of renewable energy). The program involves installing a bi-directional electricity meter to allow for flow between your solar energy production and the grid.

Why is this so important?
When your solar energy system is generating power, oftentimes it will not perfectly match the amount of power your home is consuming at any given time. There will be a constant give and take from the electrical grid to allow you to meet your energy needs.
With this program, any surplus energy your solar energy system makes will flow into the grid for others to use. You’ll receive a credit at the end of each month for any extra energy you produce. When you need to pull from the grid, this credit will be applied to any charge that would otherwise have been incurred.
No need for energy storage!
Because you remain connected to the grid, you’re able to use it as though it were a giant battery. You can send power to the grid and pull from it as though you are charging and discharging a battery. For the fixed charge of $10.83/month, this is an incredibly valuable and cost-effective way to get the most out of your solar energy system!

How much energy do I use in a year?
This can be found by pulling up your power bills from the previous year, but it’s also something we’ll go over with you when we design a solar energy system for your home. We’re well versed in the Enhanced Net Metering program, so we’ll show you exactly what you can expect from it.
If you want to learn more about the program, NS Power goes over it here on their site and also covers FAQs. And remember that it’s something we can walk you through when we’re going through the installation process.
